In stony corals it is often observed that specimens collected from a sheltered growth site have more open and more thinly branched growth forms than specimens of the same species from more exposed growth sites, where stronger water currents are found. This observation was explained using an abiotic computational model inspired by coral growth, in which the growth velocity depended locally on the absorption of a resource dispersed by advection and diffusion (Kaandorp and Sloot, J. Theor. Biol 209 (2001) 257). In that model a morphological range was found; as the Péclet-number (indicating the relative importance of advective and diffusive nutrient transport) was increased, more compact and spherical growth forms were found. Two unsatisfactory items have remained in this model, which we address in the present paper. First, an explicit curvature rule was responsible for branching. In this work we show that the curvature rule is not needed: the model exhibits spontaneous branching, provided that the resource field is computed with enough precision. Second, previously no explanation was given for the morphological range found in the simulations. Here we show that such an explanation is given by the conditions under which spontaneous branching occurs in our model, in which the compactness of the growth forms depends on the ratio of the rates of growth and nutrient transport. We did not find an effect of flow. This suggests that the computational evidence that hydrodynamics influences the compactness of corals in laminar flows may not be conclusive. The applicability of the Laplacian growth paradigm to understand coral growth is discussed. 相似文献

Phenotypic responses of Potamogeton amplifolius and Nuphar advena to different light (7% and 35% of surface irradiance) and nutrient environments were assessed with field manipulation experiments. Higher light and nutrient availability enhanced the growth of P. amplifolius by 154% and 255%, respectively. Additionally, biomass was allocated differently depending on the resource: high light availability resulted in a higher root/shoot ratio, whereas high nutrient availability resulted in a lower root/shoot ratio. Low light availability and high nutrient availability increased the nitrogen content of leaf tissue by 53% and 40% respectively, resulting in a 37% and 31% decrease in the C/N ratio. Root nitrogen content was also increased by low light and high nutrient availability, by 50% (P=0.0807) and 77% respectively, resulting in a 20% and 40% decrease in root C/N ratio. Leaf phenolics were significantly increased 72% by high light and 31% by high nutrient availability, but root phenolic concentrations were not altered significantly. None of these changes in tissue constituents resulted in altered palatability to crayfish. N. advena was killed by the same high nutrient treatment that stimulated growth in P. amplifolius, preventing assessment of phenotypic responses to nutrient availability. However, high light availability increased overall growth by 24%, but this was mainly due to increased growth of the rhizome (increased 100%), resulting in a higher root/shoot ratio. High light tended to increase the production of floating leaves (P=0.09) and significantly decreased the production of submersed leaves. High light availability decreased the nitrogen content by 15% and 25% and increased the phenolic concentration by 88% and 255% in floating and submersed leaves, respectively. The calcineurin-mediated pathway is involved in skeletal and cardiac hypertrophy and vascular development in vivo, but the relationship between this pathway and the phenotype of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) remains unknown. Using visceral SMCs in culture as a model system of differentiated SMCs, we investigated the role of the calcineurin-mediated pathway in maintaining the differentiated phenotype of SMCs, which depends on the insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I)-triggered activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-K)/protein kinase B (PKB(Akt)) pathway. Treatment with calcineurin inhibitors, cyclosporin A or FK506, or the forced expression of the natural calcineurin inhibitor, CAIN, induced SMC dedifferentiation. Notably, suppression of the promoter activities of the SMC molecular markers caldesmon and alpha1 integrin by blocking the PI3-K/PKB(Akt) pathway was rescued by the forced expression of constitutively active calcineurin Aalpha, suggesting that the calcineurin-mediated pathway is critical for maintaining the differentiated phenotype of SMCs and works downstream of the PI3-K/PKB(Akt) pathway. 相似文献

Anthers of the common annual weed, Senecio vulgaris, show an incomplete development of the two adaxial pollen sacs (microsporangia, MS). One or both adaxial MS can be missing, or they are replaced by sterile lobes. The reduction is stronger in the derived subspecies, S. vulgaris var. vulgaris than in the ancestral subspecies, S. vulgaris ssp. denticulatus. This character in S. vulgaris differs from the usual complete reduction of adaxial MS in other, independent instances of disporangiate anthers in the Asteraceae. It corresponds to the transition phenotypes associated with various recombinant genotypes derived from artificial crosses between tetrasporangiate (4 MS) and disporangiate (2 MS) species in the Asteracean genus Microseris. Senecio vulgaris could be a rare natural instance of homozygosity for a major gene permitting reduction of the adaxial MS in which the expression of the reduced phenotype is determined by different numbers of modifiers in the two subspecies. 相似文献

采用间接免疫荧光法、APAAP法及MTT法,研究了人类疱疹病毒6型(HHV6)中国南京地方株CN5感染细胞病毒抗原表达的形态学和动力学特征、CD抗原表达阳性细胞百分率的变化及PHA诱导的细胞增殖反应的改变。结果显示,CN5感染脐血单个核细胞(CBMCs)后8~12h即可在细胞内检出病毒抗原,至接种后48h,病毒抗原阳性细胞可达36%;CN5感染CBMCs和成人外周血单个核细胞(PBMCs)后可引起两者CD3阳性细胞减少、CD4阳性细胞增多,而对CD2、CD8、CD45RA阳性细胞百分率未见明显影响;CN5感染细胞裂解液对PHA诱导的PBMCs增殖反应具有抑制作用,这种抑制作用与该裂解液的蛋白浓度之间呈一剂量依赖关系,且可被HHV6抗血清所逆转。 相似文献

The family Asclepiadaceae (Dicotyledones) was created by Brown in 1810 by splitting in two the family Apocynaceae of Jussieu established in 1789. The morphological characters used to make this distinction were mainly palynological, such as presence of tetrads or pollinia and number and orientation of pollinia. Those characters, still used in higher taxonomic delimitation (families, subfamilies, and tribes), are here critically reexamined and compared to a molecular phylogeny obtained with one of the more variable plastid genes (matK) of 46 species in the order Gentianales. In this molecular phylogeny, Asclepiadaceae form a monophyletic group derived from within Apocynaceae. Each of the subfamilies of Asclepiadaceae is monophyletic and based on reliable palynological characters, but palynological characters are not useful to delimit tribes of the subfamily Asclepiadoideae. Based on the molecular data, these tribes have undergone parallelisms in several reproductive traits. 相似文献

Abstract 1. The female‐limited colour polymorphic damselfly Ischnura elegans has proven to be an interesting study organism both as an example of female sexual polymorphism, and in the context of the evolution of colour polymorphism, as a model of speciation processes. 2. Previous research suggests the existence of correlations between colour morph and other phenotypic traits, and the different female morphs in I. elegans may be pursuing alternative phenotypically integrated strategies. However, previous research on morphological differences in southern Swedish individuals of this species was only carried out on laboratory‐raised offspring from a single population, leaving open the question of how widespread such differences are. 3. The present study therefore analysed multi‐generational data from 12 populations, investigating morphological differences between the female morphs in the field, differences in the pattern of phenotypic integration between morphs, and quantified selection on morphological traits. 4. It was found that consistent morphological differences indeed existed between the morphs across populations, confirming that the previously observed differences were not simply a laboratory artefact. It was also found, somewhat surprisingly, that despite the existence of sexual dimorphism in body size and shape, patterns of phenotypic integration differed most between the morphs and not between the sexes. Finally, linear selection gradients showed that female morphology affected fecundity differently between the morphs. 5. We discuss the relevance of these results to the male mimicry hypothesis and to the existence of potential ecological differences between the morphs. 相似文献

The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a major pest of cultivated corn in North America and has recently begun to invade Europe. In addition to crop rotation, chemical control is an important option for D. v. virgifera management. However, resistance to chemical insecticides has evolved repeatedly in the USA. In Europe, chemical control strategies have yet to be harmonized and no surveys of insecticide resistance have been carried out. We investigated the resistance to methyl‐parathion and aldrin of samples from nine D. v. virgifera field populations originating from two European outbreaks thought to have originated from two independent introductions from North America. Diagnostic concentration bioassays revealed that all nine D. v. virgifera field populations were resistant to aldrin but susceptible to methyl‐parathion. Aldrin resistance was probably introduced independently, at least twice, from North America into Europe, as there is no evident selection pressure to account for an increase of frequency of aldrin resistance in each of the invasive outbreaks in Europe. Our results suggest that organophosphates, such as methyl‐parathion, may still provide effective control of both larval and adult D. v. virgifera in the European invasive outbreaks studied. 相似文献
